Associate Research Fellow/Research Fellow (Trial Manager)

University of Exeter – School of Sport and Health Sciences (with Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry)

Ref: N2743

Salary in the range £24,273 – £31,671 per annum pro rata

Fixed Term contract for 27 months

The School, in conjunction with the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD) wishes to recruit a 0.7 full-time equivalent Associate Research Fellow/Research Fellow (Trial Manager) from 1st September to support the work of Professor Adrian Taylor (Principal Investigator) and colleagues in PCMD on an NIHR, Health Technology Assessment (HTA) funded project.

The successful applicant will contribute to a research project involving a pragmatic pilot randomised trial investigating the effectiveness of a physical activity counselling and smoking reduction intervention, among smokers not wishing to quit in socially deprived areas of Plymouth, UK. We propose to assess how feasible it is to recruit ‘hard to reach’ smokers into such a trial and provide valuable information for a possible future multi-centred trial.

The post holder will manage the trial in phase 1 involving mixed-methods developmental work, and in phase 2 involving recruitment of smokers from primary care, NHS Stop Smoking Services and other community settings, to receive a counselling intervention or brief advice, with assessments, conducted by 1.4 full-time equivalent counsellors/research assistants (to be appointed in 2011).

The post will be based in Plymouth, in the offices of the Primary Care research unit of PCMD. The study will involve input from a range of expertise in both the School of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Exeter, and PCMD. Other co-applicants are based at St George’s University of London, UCL, and University of Birmingham, giving the study a major significance.

Applicants will possess at least a relevant MSc and preferably a relevant PhD or equivalent and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

Applicants will be able to manage complex quantitative and qualitative data, have excellent written and oral communication skills, oversee the delivery of a complex health behaviour change intervention, and have proven leadership skills to ensure the smooth running of an exciting project among ‘hard to reach’ smokers in socially deprived areas of Plymouth.

For further information please contact Professor Adrian Taylor, a.h.taylor@ex.ac.uk or telephone (01392) 724747. To apply, please send a CV and covering letter with the contact details of three referees, to Mrs Sophie Beardmore (sshs-school-office@exeter.ac.uk), School Office, School of Sport and Health Sciences, St Luke’s Campus, Heavitree Road, Exeter, EX1 2LU, quoting the job reference N2743.

The closing date for completed applications is 18th June 2010.

The University of Exeter is an equal opportunity employer and promotes diversity in its workforce and, whilst all applicants will be judged on merit alone, is particularly keen to consider applications from groups currently underrepresented in the workforce.
