SUMMARY:ISBM 2025 WEBINAR SERIES - Scaling up psychosocial interventions: from evidence to policy
DESCRIPTION:Scaling up psychosocial interventions: from evidence to policy – Dr Vikram Patel \nA mental health crisis is evident in many countries\, regardless of their mental health human resources or spending. The mental health system is dominated by specialty care\, and most care is provided at the stages of clinically diagnosed disorders\, neglecting early interventions and long-term recovery focused interventions. This paradigm of care must shift towards adopting a system-wide change with empowerment of front-line\, community-based providers to deliver evidence based psychosocial interventions as the foundation of mental health care. This lecture\nwill describe the evidence in support of this approach\, its strengths and an overview of the EMPOWER program which is building a suite of digital tools\, resources and methods to rapidly build the capacity of a front-line workforce to learn\, master and deliver evidence-based psychosocial interventions. \nVikram Patel is the Paul Farmer Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He also holds honorary Professorships at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health\, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Public Health Foundation of India. He co-leads the Department’s Mental Health for All lab and co-leads the GlobalMentalHealth@Harvard initiative. His work has focused on the burden\nof mental health problems across the life course\, their association with social disadvantage\, and the use of community resources for their prevention and treatment. He is a co-founder of the Movement for Global Mental Health\, the Centre for Global Mental Health (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine)\, the Mental Health Innovations Network\, and Sangath\, an Indian NGO which won the WHO Public Health Champion of India and the MacArthur Foundation’s\nInternational Prize. He served on the Committee of India’s first National Mental Health Policy and the WHO High Level Independent Commission for Non-Communicable Diseases. He co-led the Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health & Sustainable Development and the Lancet- World Psychiatric Association Commission on Depression.

SUMMARY:Older Adult's SIG Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Older Adult SIG will be hosting an online (MS Teams) webinar by Professor Eef Hogervorst\, Loughborough University\, on Wednesday 13 November 2024 at 12-1pm titled “The dulling of the senses as an early indicator of dementia risk”. If you would like to attend\, please email Dr David Maidment (Older Adult SIG Co-Chair) who will then share the meeting information\, d.w.maidment@lboro.ac.uk. \nIn this talk\, Eef will discuss the work of Dr David Maidment and Dr Maria Goodwin on hearing loss and the various models to explain associations with dementia risk. She will also go into the work of Ahmet Begde on vision loss\, where a visual sensitivity test in the EPIC Norfolk study in 2004 was explored. In those without dementia\, poor performance on this test gave an increased risk for dementia on average 10 years before a formal diagnosis was done. Again\, various models could explain why these associations exist. The question remains whether interventions based on stimulation of the senses can delay\, or even treat dementia risk. \nFor more information about Eef and her work\, you can visit her website via https://www.lboro.ac.uk/schools/sport-exercise-health-sciences/people/eef-hogervorst/.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Engaging young people in PPI
DESCRIPTION:The UKSBM Special Interest Group in Child Health are hosting a webinar on Engaging young people in PPI. \nJoin us on 7th February 2-3pm to hear from two speakers: \nDr Elanor Hinton (University of Bristol) \n \nPresentation title: Integrating and evaluating PPI with young people within an weight-management intervention co-development project.\nPresentation abstract: We have co-developed an intervention\, ‘AIM2Change’\, based on Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT)\, with young people from the Care of Childhood Obesity clinic in Bristol. Integral to this project have been hearing young peoples’ voices and advice during nine PPI sessions at key points to ensure the intervention is acceptable and meaningful for young people living with obesity. During the talk\, we will hear from one of the young people to hear how to effectively engage young people in PPI. We will also discuss our insights into key elements of working with young people for PPI\, including training\, continuity of involvement\, and communication. \nLauren Cross (University of Cambridge MRC Epidemiology unit) \n \nPresentation title: Capturing all voices: a thematic synthesis of participation experiences in school-based health research.\nPresentation abstract: Schools are an increasingly popular setting to conduct and implement public health research and initiatives. However encouraging participation can be complex and challenging\, with growing concern surrounding representation and the generalisability of research samples. Working with students\, school staff\, and a youth worker from a diverse range of backgrounds\, our systematic review seeks to explore barriers and facilitators to participation in school-based health research (focusing on prevention of mental health disorders and/or obesity). This presentation will describe how we worked with public collaborators to shape our review and provide an initial overview of findings. This knowledge could help inform inclusive participation strategies to conduct research which connects and engages everyone. \nClick here to sign up.

SUMMARY:17th International Congress of Behavioural Medicine (ICBM)
DESCRIPTION:It is our great pleasure to invite you to the next Congress of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (ISBM). The Congress will take place August 23-26\, 2023\, in Vancouver\, British Columbia\, Canada. Vancouver’s famous modern cityscape is located on the Strait of Georgia\, where the mountains touch the ocean. Vancouver is well-known for its diverse population\, its hospitality and the natural beauty of the surrounding area. \nThe congress theme is “From Local to Global: Behavior\, Climate and Health” and was inspired by the very location where the Congress is being held. Where better to discuss our future challenges and the role of behavioral medicine to address them\, than in this international city? \nWe are planning an exciting four days of keynotes\, master lectures\, workshops\, and symposia around our congress theme. In addition to our intellectually stimulating program\, there will be plenty of time to meet friends and colleagues for connecting and socializing. And the Congress wouldn’t be complete without our traditional festive banquet\, where we all celebrate ISBM’s accomplishments and visions together. The Congress officially opens on the evening of Wednesday\, August 23\, after a full day of workshops\, and ends with the Closing Ceremony in the late afternoon of August 26\, where we honour our outgoing President\, Anne H\, Berman\, Ph.D.\, and welcome our incoming President\, Kerry Sherman\, Ph.D. \nPlease check out the ICBM 2023 website for up-to-date information on the Congress.
