SUMMARY:Climate Change SIG Webinar: Let's go beyond climate anxiety: How can we help children shift from “What’s wrong?” to “What can we do?"
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe are pleased to invite you to the next UKSBM Climate Change SIG webinar – \n  \nLet’s go beyond climate anxiety: How can we help children shift from “What’s wrong?” to “What can we do?” \n  \nSpeaker:\nSanae Okamoto (UNU MERIT\, Netherlands and Co-Chair WG4 CliMent COST ATION) and Nidhi Nagabhatla (UNU CRIS\, Belgium and Co-Chair WG4 CliMent COST ATION)\n\nSynopsis:\nOur recent assessment argues that children need a better balance of climate information\, emotional support\, and real-world experience to build confidence and resilience in the face of climate change. Worldwide\, many children are exposed to climate anxiety\, helplessness\, and confusion because the crisis feels vast\, persistent\, and difficult to influence. The answer is not to shield children from climate realities\, but to help them process them in healthier ways. We call for active and meaningful involvement of families\, schools\, communities\, and digital environments\, all working together to strengthen a child’s sense of agency — the feeling that they can make choices and have some control over their lives.\nWe also reflect on how digital media can both help and harm. Climate content online can build awareness and connect young people with solutions\, but repetitive\, alarming messages\, misinformation\, and doom-heavy coverage can also heighten stress and reduce self-esteem. To counter this\, they recommend a “balanced six-point approach” that pairs facts with emotional support\, hope with realism\, screen time with outdoor learning\, guided learning with independent exploration\, and individual action with collective effort.\nSchools are presented as a key part of the solution\, and we reiterate that climate education should do more than teach facts: it should encourage critical thinking\, link human behavior to climate impacts\, and give children opportunities to explore practical responses. Outdoor and nature-based learning are also highlighted as especially valuable because they can improve mental well-being while deepening environmental awareness.\nIn conclusion\, climate education should help children move from asking “what’s wrong?” to “what can we do?”. Their core message is that children are more likely to face the climate crisis constructively if adults create supportive learning environments that combine science\, emotional care\, and opportunities for action.
