Older Adult’s SIG Webinar
The Older Adult SIG will be hosting an online (MS Teams) webinar by Professor Eef Hogervorst, Loughborough University, on Wednesday 13 November 2024 at 12-1pm titled “The dulling of the senses as an early indicator of dementia risk”. If you would like to attend, please email Dr David Maidment (Older Adult SIG Co-Chair) who will then share the meeting information, d.w.maidment@lboro.ac.uk.
In this talk, Eef will discuss the work of Dr David Maidment and Dr Maria Goodwin on hearing loss and the various models to explain associations with dementia risk. She will also go into the work of Ahmet Begde on vision loss, where a visual sensitivity test in the EPIC Norfolk study in 2004 was explored. In those without dementia, poor performance on this test gave an increased risk for dementia on average 10 years before a formal diagnosis was done. Again, various models could explain why these associations exist. The question remains whether interventions based on stimulation of the senses can delay, or even treat dementia risk.
