Webinar: Engaging young people in PPI
The UKSBM Special Interest Group in Child Health are hosting a webinar on Engaging young people in PPI.

Dr Elanor Hinton (University of Bristol)
Presentation title: Integrating and evaluating PPI with young people within an weight-management intervention co-development project.
Presentation abstract: We have co-developed an intervention, ‘AIM2Change’, based on Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT), with young people from the Care of Childhood Obesity clinic in Bristol. Integral to this project have been hearing young peoples’ voices and advice during nine PPI sessions at key points to ensure the intervention is acceptable and meaningful for young people living with obesity. During the talk, we will hear from one of the young people to hear how to effectively engage young people in PPI. We will also discuss our insights into key elements of working with young people for PPI, including training, continuity of involvement, and communication.

Presentation title: Capturing all voices: a thematic synthesis of participation experiences in school-based health research.
Presentation abstract: Schools are an increasingly popular setting to conduct and implement public health research and initiatives. However encouraging participation can be complex and challenging, with growing concern surrounding representation and the generalisability of research samples. Working with students, school staff, and a youth worker from a diverse range of backgrounds, our systematic review seeks to explore barriers and facilitators to participation in school-based health research (focusing on prevention of mental health disorders and/or obesity). This presentation will describe how we worked with public collaborators to shape our review and provide an initial overview of findings. This knowledge could help inform inclusive participation strategies to conduct research which connects and engages everyone.
